Oakland Park, FL- Scott Herman has filed papers to campaign for the Oakland Park City Commission. Herman, a disabled combat Iraq War veteran, is seeking to fill an open seat created by the resignation of Shari McCartney. McCartney, a lesbian, participated in her last commission meeting, Oct. 21. She is reportedly moving her family to Fort Lauderdale.
A native of North Carolina, Herman campaigned for the Florida House of Representatives in 2012 and 2014, losing to Perry E. Thurston, Jr. and George Moraitis, respectively. As a Democrat in 2014, he garnered more than 40 percent of the vote despite low turnout in Broward County.
The Oakland Park race will be a special non-partisan election scheduled for March 15, 2016. Herman said he is focused on veteran’s issues and establishing a citizen’s review commission with broad powers to monitor police activity. Herman is married to Cale Choi, an airline pilot.
