Forensic evidence, help from the community and diligent detective work all played a part in finding the culprit responsible for a rash of car burglaries plaguing the city of Oakland Park during the month of October.
On October 20 and 29, residents of the La Estancia and Lake Emerald communities woke up to an ugly realization. Many cars in the gated communities had their windows smashed and their contents riffled through. While some of the cars had random items stolen, for the most part, the burglaries seemed to be mostly futile.
Oakland Park detectives, assisted by Broward Sheriff’s Office Burglary Apprehension Team, conducted an extensive investigation. Additional deputies from several other BSO jurisdictions added to the law enforcement presence during the investigation. Broward Crimestoppers helped generate tips from the public which provided detectives with valuable investigative leads. Oakland Park Crime Scene Investigative Aids discovered blood left at the scene when a burglar cut himself on one of the smashed windows.
On November 12, BSO’s crime lab obtained DNA results that confirmed that Tyric Prince’s blood was left at the Lake Emerald crime scene. That same day Prince was taken into custody without incident and described to detectives how he climbed the communities’ walls to get to the cars and his part in the burglaries at La Estancia and Lake Emerald.
Prince now faces charges for 21 counts of burglary conveyance, 20 counts of criminal mischief, one count of grand theft, four counts of petit theft and violation of probation. He has a criminal history including charges for robbery, burglary of an occupied dwelling, petit theft, grand theft, battery, obstruction, trespassing, loitering and prowling and violation of probation.
